Aquatics Training: Lifeguard/WSI


Though we do not offer training at our headquarters, you can find information and the facilities in your area that do provide the training by following the links at left.

Red Cross Lifeguard Training,

Red Cross Lifeguard Training will teach you:

  • Skills and knowledge to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid
Requirements - Participants Must:
  1. Be at least 15 years of age by the last day of the course attended
  2. Attend all training sessions
  3. Successfully complete a pre-course screening session which includes the following
    • Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick
    • 100 yards breaststroke
    • 100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing, or breaststroke or a combination of both
    • Swim 20 yards (front crawl or breast stroke), surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, and return with it to the surface, and swim back 20 yards. This is a timed event.
  4. Perform all required skills with 100% accuracy
  5. Pass a written test with a score of at least 80%

Lifeguard Review Training (Offered to currently certified Red Cross lifeguards only),

During Review training, you will:

  • Review the skills learned in Lifeguard
    Training
  • Renew CPR certification
  • Refresh your knowledge of first aid
Requirements - Participants Must:
  1. Have a current Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificate
  2. Have a current Red Cross Lifeguard Training certificate

Water Safety Instructor

WSI will teach you to:

  1. Teach other individuals how to be safe around water and/or swim
  2. Use swim program materials effectively
  3. Plan and conduct effective swim/safety courses
  4. Evaluate progress of students for certification
  5. Prepare and submit accurate records and reports

Requirements

To participate in the Water Safety Instructor course, individuals must:

  1. Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of this course
  2. Have successfully completed Fundamentals of Instructor Training
  3. Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
  • Swim the following strokes :
    1. Front crawl-25 yards
    2. Back crawl-25 yards
    3. Breaststroke-25 yards
    4. Elementary backstroke-25 yards
    5. Sidestroke-25 yards
    6. Butterfly-15 yards
  • Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
  • Tread water for 1 minute
