Baltimore County grandmother, Pat Shaw, is in Louisiana, deliberately sitting in Hurricane Gustav's path. She's one of many Red Cross emergency worker volunteers doing what they can to help. And this isn't the first time she's been called.

OVERNIGHT, RED CROSS SHELTERS 45,000 EVACUEES

American Red Cross volunteers, including a contingent from Central Maryland provided shelter to Hurricane Gustav evacuees last night in eight states, caring for nearly 45,000 people.

The Baltimore area chapter joined forces in a massive Red Cross preparation effort during the past two weeks, moving 8 local workers, two mobile feeding trucks and mobilizing others to leave after the hurricane passes.  Combining organizational resources to open 500 shelters in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, this is the largest Red Cross relief effort since Hurricane Katrina.  The relief agency is prepared to offer food, shelter and emotional support to shelter 500,000 evacuees for a six-day period.

You can help people affected by thousands of disasters across the country each year, disasters like the Hurricanes of 2008, by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. P.O. Box 64096, Baltimore, MD 21264.  Internet users can make a secure donation at www.redcross-cmd.org.  Or call 1-800-REDCROSS.

A note from our Executive Director

Dear Friend of the Red Cross,

Here at the Red Cross of Central Maryland your contribution goes into action long before hurricanes like Gustav and Hanna make landfall. This week we deployed two Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicles (ERV) to Alabama to set up before the storm gets close; deployed four volunteers -- Rebecca Tucker, Adam Zurgable, Mary Ann and Mike Prucnal; and have arranged for hundreds of volunteers to prepare to deploy if needed. The first four will be assigned to one of 200 mobile feeding trucks the Red Cross is stationing in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

When a reporter from WBAL TV asked one of the volunteers what the public can do to help she said, “Pray for us and for the people in the path of the storm, and consider making a financial contribution to the Red Cross.”

On average it costs our chapter $1,200 to train a disaster volunteer and approximately $2,500 to deploy just one of the Red Cross ERVs (including housing and meals for volunteer drivers). We spend an additional $3,200 yearly for maintenance and fuel for one Emergency Response Vehicle. Here at home your support enables us to provide the resources needed to respond when disaster strikes. When Katrina hit, your Central Maryland chapter was instrumental in fundraising and trained/deployed the most volunteers. Your continued generosity allows us to bring emergency relief whenever and wherever disaster strikes.

Thank you,

Frank Miller,
Executive Director

LOCAL RED CROSS RAMPS UP FOR GUSTAV

Baltimore area Red Cross volunteer recruitment is beginning in the event that Hurricane Gustav comes ashore in the Gulf States.  Emergency services volunteers experienced in sheltering, feeding, health and mental health services are on stand-by and tomorrow two teams of local volunteers will be driving a pair of emergency response vehicles south to preposition for the storm.
Once they arrive at an Alabama staging area, they will stock the vehicles with food, water, clean up and comfort kits.
